About

I have a copy of ‘Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management‘ (1861) on my bookshelf.

It’s big.  It’s not light.  But it’s there.

Her book is still on sale in bookstores, seemingly popular after 150 years in print.  It’s packed full of useful advice for the mistress, housekeeper, cook and other domestic servants.  We no longer live like our Victorian ancestors did, and some might argue that the role of ‘mistress, housekeeper, cook and other domestic servants’ is now rolled up into one – modern woman (or man).

Even when it was first published, I’m sure there were women out there who tried out her recipes or household advice and made mistakes or discovered improvements along the way.

Here’s my challenge:  Is it possible to apply the advice of Isabella Beeton to 21st century living?   Could my life be a lot easier (and organised) if her suggestions are followed?  Will I make my own mistakes or improvements along the way?

Over the next 365 days, I’m going to find out.
